The AI Gap

Everyone is already behind. Here's the bigger picture, and how to catch up.

This field guide comes from The AI Gap, my main-stage talk at the Grant Professionals Association's GrantSummit 2026, in San Antonio on November 6.

Most of us tried AI once or twice, got something mediocre, and filed it under “it can never…” Meanwhile the tools kept moving. In 2023 they answered one question at a time. Today they read whole documents, research the web, use software, and work for hours on their own.

That's the gap: between what we use AI for and what it can do now. The field guide is the talk, made usable. Every hard part comes with something you can do.

Use it to find the parts of your week AI can already take on, to build a simple system that gets better each time you use it, to check AI's work when there's a lot of it, and to answer your board's and colleagues' questions about privacy, ethics and detection.
